Never Eden

While we listen to the moan in the earth
And hear the strain in the air
We ignore the agony at birth
And the hunger in a stare

While we send the rounded steel out
Ripping through cities not our own
We rest with little doubt
In the complacency of our home

While the innocent get mangled
For the cause we all condone
And our patriotism strangled
From the conscious guilt our own

While the cries and anger rise
Where we once were lord and king
We look with naïve surprise
At the misfortunes that we bring

While we choke the planet blue
And our systems run amok
We admit to only a few
That our futures out of luck

Can we ever get back to Eden
Where the steel knows not its’ iron
And you and I could feel freedom
Without so much as trying
